Catalogue Description

Eveline Roberts Johnson 1908 - 2007

Eveline Roberts Johnson was born at Tudhoe Colliery, near Spennymoor in 1908. She was taken to her mother's [Maria nee Edwards] village of Tudhoe after her father, Thomas Owen Roberts, died as a result of injuries sustained in a pit accident when she was only 5 months old.
In 1914 her mother married George Johnson. She was to spend most of her life in the Trimdons, apart from time spent nursing in Surrey and Sunderland.
Eveline left the convent school in Hartlepool at the age of 17 and worked for Thompson's Red Stamp Stores until she was old enough, at 18, to go into nursing. She spent time at the Ingham Infirmary, South Shields, but had to leave due to ill health.
During the Second World War she served in the ARP [Air Raid Precautions] and then started a career in teaching, working at Hartlepool, Trimdon Parochial School, Horden Special School and Deaf Hill.
After retiring in 1965 she became more involved in community projects including collecting and displaying local history. She was a prominent member of the Trimdon Past and Present Society. She produced three books: 'Trimdon Snippets' (1998), 'More Trimdon Snippets' (2000) and 'The Last of Trimdon Snippets' (2002).
