Typescript copy of a letter from J. [sic ] Brown [Frederick Brown, vicar of Barnard Castle, 1865-1898], The Vicarage, Barnard Castle, to 'My Lord Bishop' concerning the local activities of a 'sect' known as the Salvation Army, under the leadership of William Robinson, n.d. [c.1878-1879] 20th c. Although founded in 1865, the Salvation Army took that name only in 1878. The letter was written before the Salvation Army was widely recognised as a church ('I spoke strongly against this establishing a new sect ') something that was certainly happening in the north east by 1880. The letter makes reference to the Salvation Army's use of drums and fiddles. If written after 1879 it would almost certainly mention brass instruments as the first Salvation Army band was formed in Consett in 1879.
