Heart of Teesdale was a major project focused on chosen rural areas of Upper and Lower Teesdale between 2011 and 2016.
The main aim was to involve local communities in recognising and appreciating their surroundings and encourage them to develop skills to protect the landscape and cultural heritage. The project involved identifying and mapping biodiversity of the area, access and conservation needs, local culture and heritage, industries of the past and life today mainly focused on farming, and exploring opportunities for young people to find employment in traditional rural occupations such as dry stone walling, quarrying and hedge laying. Part of the project was also to make the area more attractive for visitors.
The project was funded mainly by the National Lottery and Durham County Council.
