Hearth Tax returns

The Record Office holds copies of County Durham hearth tax returns for 1663-1666 and 1674.

Hearth tax records are on microfilm.

They give the names of individuals with chargeable and non-chargeable hearths and the numbers of hearths. Some of the records are damaged and some are illegible. The original records are in The National Archives.

The County Durham Hearth Tax return for Lady Day 1666 has been indexed, transcribed and analysed in a publication of The British Record Society entitled ‘Durham Hearth Tax’. There is a copy in the Record Office reference library (ref: C 162).
