Find out about the Market Place in the heart of Durham City and how it has changed over time.
Fascinating images of features which have now disappeared.
If you are visiting Durham City or live in the area, and have an interest in local history, you may enjoy this learning unit, designed primarily for use in schools.
This local history project uses maps, trade directories, census returns, parish records and photographs to support Key Stage 2 History, QCA Unit 18: What was it like to live here in the past? and Unit 12: How did life change in our locality in Victorian times?
The sources can also be used by children from other Key Stages, or teachers can use the documents to develop and build on their own ideas. For example, the documents can be used to complement Key Stage 3 History: Britain 1750 – 1900, how expansion and industry affected the local area and the wider community.
