Monumental inscriptions, cemetery and crematorium registers

Two lists of cemetery records, specifically:

  1. Monumental inscription surveys for graveyards in County Durham and Darlington
  2. Cemetery and crematorium registers on microfilm at Durham Record Office

Registers of burials in church graveyards are listed in our Church Register Database. An additional list of useful grave plans for cemeteries will be found on a separate information guide. This guide is to the other useful cemetery records: our search room library contains many transcripts and indexes of monumental inscriptions in Anglican parish church graveyards and other cemeteries; there are also several cemetery and crematorium registers on microfilm or in our archive collections.

These are useful sources if you are trying to find a grave. Please use our quick search or research service to request a search while the search room is closed.

Monumental inscriptions

This list gives printed index volume numbers for monumental inscription surveys in graveyards. These are a snapshot of the legible writing on the surviving headstones, and other monuments, in a particular burial ground or church. Mostly these refer to parish graveyards but some are for civil cemeteries. Most surveys include a location plan. Some were compiled prior to major landscaping works or other alterations.

In addition to the sources listed below we also have a book of miscellaneous monumental inscriptions in our library: index 470.
