Tithe plans and apportionments

A guide to locating tithe plans and apportionments for County Durham.

Introduction

Under the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836, agricultural land holdings in England were assessed for local cash payments in lieu of previous tithes of produce. This involved drawing up a detailed plan of each township in County Durham and an apportionment book giving the owner, tenant, use and value of each field, plantation, garden and close numbered on the plan.

Three copies of the tithe plan and apportionment book were made for each township:

  1. for the Tithe Commissioners (held in The National Archives)
  2. for the diocese
  3. for the parish (copies held here at Durham Record Office)

Sometimes a further copy was made for an estate or local council.

Apportionments are organised alphabetically by the surname of the land owner.

The township in County Durham is a subdivision of a parish, the level at which the local Overseers of the Poor collected tithes. Some areas had previous arrangements with Durham diocese that meant no tithe was due, so no plan was produced.

The townships are often fragmented, with detached portions, so please use the first edition six inch scale Ordnance Survey map to determine the township matching any particular location.

About the tithe plans and apportionments list

The list is split into alphabetical sections covering townships A to C, D to G etc.

It includes the townships surveyed for tithe assessment, usually between 1837 and 1852. The parish name is given in brackets.

Where we hold a copy of a plan and/or apportionment then our catalogue reference is given in the list. Otherwise the location of the diocesan copy is given.

Parishes in the diocese of Durham

Diocesan copies of tithe records are at Durham University Library Archives & Special Collections, Palace Green, Durham (referred to as ASC in the list).

See Durham Diocesan Records Tithe apportionments and plans

Parishes in the Anglican diocese of Leeds

For County Durham parishes which lie within the historic boundaries of Yorkshire, diocesan copies of tithe records are at the Leeds branch of the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Nepshaw Lane South, Morley, Leeds, LS27 7JQ (referred to as Leeds in the list), or at North Yorkshire County Record Office, Northallerton (referred to as NY in the list).

Edmundbyers and Muggleswick records have been transferred to Northumberland Archives.

The list also includes townships for which no tithe was payable and no plan produced.

For many of the township names in bold type where we hold a plan we have created a high quality digital image, a copy of which which can be purchased from us.
