Turnpike road records

A guide to turnpike road records at Durham Record Office.

Introduction

This guide provides details of the turnpike trusts which existed in County Durham and the part of the North Riding of Yorkshire which became part of Durham in 1974. It includes the dates of the Acts of Parliament which authorised their operations and lists relevant records held in Durham Record Office.

Maintenance of The King’s Highway was the responsibility of parish authorities until around 1700. Turnpike Trusts then took over the construction and maintenance of major roads, until the creation of local Highway Boards in 1878 (and then County Councils in 1889).

The Record Office holds a set of local Acts of Parliament from 1798 in its reference library.
