Card index of businesses in County Durham, 1959
The index was revised to mid-1959 and the following explanations may be helpful:
(i) The number and letter/number combination in the top left corner refers to a class of industry within the current (1960) and former systems respectively of the Standard Industrial Classification. A firm falling within, say, four classes will appear four times in the Index. Each class reference will appear on the card, the uppermost normally referring to the section in which the card is found.
(ii) Near the top right corner is a figure or figures of employees at the firm, each under its appropriate year. The abbreviation S/O means Self Only and the abbreviation Stg. (i.e. Standing) means No Employees, in a short term sense only.
(iii) The proprietor's name followed by T/A (i.e. Trading As) in brackets often follows the name of the firm.
(iv) NCB = National Coal Board; C.E.G.B. = Central Electricity Generating Board; M.V.R. = Motor Vehicle Repairs; Reps. = Repairs; Eng. = Engineering; Accum. = Accumulator; Elec. = Electrical; L.P.P. = Lithography, Printing and Paper; B.T.C. = British Transport Commission
