Catalogue Description

Thomas Bell and Sons, surveyors

(see also D/CG 6 Bute, D/CG 7 Clavering, D/CG 16 Ravensworth,
D/CG 19 Winlaton Lordship etc)

These are the working papers of Thomas Bell and his successor, C. Seymour Bell, relating, in the main, to properties on the south bank of the Tyne above Gateshead. Other Bell material may be found in the Tyne and Wear Archives, at the Northumberland Record Office and at the Archives and Special Collections Section of the Durham University Library (see Durham R.O. file X1/38)

The original files were variously by place and client; some had formed part of a numbered sequence, others had not. The arrangement here represents a compromise but is essentially an arrangement by place. Where an original file number exists it is given in the text of the individual entries. Within each of the main headings material is listed in date order.

The vast majority of the material relates to the Winlaton Partnership Estate. This was a patchwork quilt of properties in Winlaton and immediately adjoining areas overlapping in ownership with the Lordship of Winlaton. The Partnership Estate was finally partitioned in 1884.

The Lordship of Winlaton had undergone an incomplete division between the Selbys, Hodgsons and Andersons in 1632/3. The basis of the Partnership Estate was in the undivided portion. However, the term was in some instances loosely applied to properties owned in the Winlaton area by the individual Lords of Winlaton (both in right of their lordship and in their own rights) which were held jointly with the other lordship families. The strict description would have applied to 12/96ths of the Lordship: 3/96ths held by the Ravensworth and sold to the Claverings, 7/96ths by the Bowes/Strathmores, 1/96th by the Butes and 1/96th by the Pitts and sold to the Cowens. In practice the properties of Butes, Ravensworths, Cowens, Claverings, Towneleys, Strathmores and Blackett Beaumonts were included and the business further complicated by many exchanges between these seven families. Related material may be found in D/CG 6 (Bute), D/CG 7 (Clavering), D/CG 16 (Ravensworth), D/CG 19 (Lordship of Winlaton) and also D/X 35.

Other important characters are Charles Thorp, D.D., Rector of Ryton, Archdeacon of Durham and Warden of Durham University (see also D/CG 25 and D/CG 27) and George Hopple Ramsey, colliery proprietor (see also D/CG 6 and D/CG 19).
