Catalogue Description
Papers of the S.S.A.F.A. and other relatedwelfare organisations for servicemen, ex-servicemenand their familiesE.R. Hanby Holmes served as the Hon. Secretary of the Barnard Castle Division of the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families' Association from the 1920's to c.1960. He was also Hon. Secretary of the Greta Bridge Division of the Association from 1936 to 1944, and Secretary of the Durham County Branch from 1940 to 1943. The volume of work, slight before 1939, remained substantial after 1945 due to the establishment of several army camps in the Barnard Castle area viz. Westwick, Barford, Stainton, Humbleton and Startforth. The United Services Fund acted with the S.S.A.F.A. for benevolent purposes in the early 1920s; E.R. Hanby Holmes acted as local representative in Barnard Castle. Holmes also served as the District Head of the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Help Society at Barnard Castle from c.1940 to 1957.

As Honorary Secretary of the Barnard Castle Branch of the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers, E.R. Hanby Holmes played a leading role in the foundation of Barnard Castle Ex Servicemen's Club. This opened at 50-52 The Bank in September 1920 but closed in 1924 after poor trading. The premises were sold in 1932.
