Catalogue Description

Turnpikes

A detailed account of the construction of Whorlton Bridge and of the operation of the related turnpike trust in the 1830s and 1840s will be found in Bulletins 30 and 32 of the Durham County Local History Society 1983 and 1984. There is further material relating to the Whorlton scheme in the Watson papers (D/Wat ) deposited in the Durham Record Office.
At Whorlton there was to have been a three arch masonry edifice; this was swept away before completion, ruining the contractors, and replaced by the present suspension bridge to the design of Green of Newcastle. Many clients of Thomas Wheldon subscribed to this financially unsuccessful affair.
