Framwellgate was a township, the rural part of the chapelry of St Margaret of Antioch, in Durham St Oswald parish; Framwellgate Moor became a separate parish (St Cuthbert) in 1858

- Framwellgate was a civil parish from 1866
- part of Durham Rural Sanitary District 1875-1894
- Framwellgate Moor was created in 1894 as a rural civil parish with an elected parish council, gaining Finchale from Elvet
- part of Durham Rural District 1894-1974
- part of Durham City District 1974-2009; Framwellgate Moor lost Newton Hall and Harbour House, but had gained Cocken in 1937
