The original Independent or Congregational Church was founded in Framwellgate in about 1778, probably originating as a split from the Claypath Church which was Presbyterian. In 1821 the Framwellgate Church was sold, but it had already begun to unite with the Claypath Church when the latter ceased to be Presbyterian and became Independent in 1804. From that date Lewis Jones, the minister at Framwellgate, was also the minister at Claypath. The present church building in Claypath was begun in 1885 in front of the old chapel.
