These papers relating to the Johnson family come from Messrs Francis and Company of Cambridge whose predecessors in business are mentioned in the collection. Lt. Col. Edward Johnson was born in Newcastle in March 1798 and moved to the Deanery, Chester-le-Street in 1830. There he died on January 8th 1885. His brother Francis Johnson of Low Newton Hall,a Deputy Lieutenant for Northumberland, died some years before him at the age of ninety-six, passing an extensive estate to the colonel. Edward Johnson was a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Durham and for many years was chairman of Chester-le-Street bench of magistrates. He was at one time Lieutenant-Colonel of the North Durham Militia and was also Master of the Durham County Foxhounds.
