Stotsfield Mine belonged to the Weardale Lead Company and was mined for lead and, later, for fluorspar. In 1960, when these plans were drawn up, it was being worked for fluorspar. It ceased operations in 1966. Details of the mine are given in Professor Kingsley Dunham, Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Great Britain: England and Wales: Geology of the Northern Pennine Orefield: Volume 1: Tyne to Stainmore, H.M.S.O. London, 1948; 2nd. ed., 1990. The plans were drawn by Dr. D. Hallett and R.P. Freeman while they were undergraduates at Durham University.
