Catalogue Description
CORRESPONDENCEThe Salvin correspondence consists mainly of in-letters; only Gerard Salvin in the 19th century seems consistently to have maintained a record of out-letters. The correspondense is fragmentary till the mid-18th century, when the survival rate is fairly high till the mid-19th century. The early 18th century letters received by Ralph Salvin of Tudhoe have also survived as a coherent series. The correspondence of Gerard Salvin in the 19th century includes a quantity of rather miscellaneous estate papers.
The Salvin letters are illuminating with regard to Catholic affairs and to links with continental convents and seminaries, where children were educated and daughters entered. They also include a number of letters from and concerning the Stephensons (D/Sa/C 139, 141, 143). Individual letters of some interest are D/Sa/C 23-26 (description of one of the Princesses in 1714), D/Sa/C 49 (sea bathing at Scarborough, 1719), D/Sa/C 78 (Wesley's vist to Barnard Castle), D/Sa/C 204 (early reference to Pickwick Papers) and D/Sa/C 222 (mantraps).
