The original schools were situated on a piece of waste land opposite the Tyne Plate Glass Works. There was no room for expansion so a proposed new Infants' School would have to have been sited away from the main buildings. Eventually the Plate Glass Co. offered to provide a new site for all three schools and to bear all the building costs in exchange for the original site, 1863 - 1873
