Ref: EP/Du.SM 242Each of the following documents takes the form of an indenture between the Chapelwardens and sometimes also the Overseers, who are individually named and their occupations given, and the lessee.
All the leases are for 21 years and have the following conditions in common: the lessee is made responsible for maintenance and repair of the property, the chapelwardens often reserving the right to inspect the premises at any time; arrears of rent for more than 20 days will terminate lease; the lessee is unable to grant, alien or assign the lease or sub-let without written permission of chapelwardens and vestry; and occasionally there is a condition that trees must not be cut without permission.
In each case details are given of boundaries and occupants of the property and unless specifically mentioned otherwise it is situated in the parish of St. Margaret's, Durham.
The consideration which is given consists of an entry fine and/or an annual rent, the latter being paid in two equal portions, unless otherwise specified at Pentecost [7th Sunday after Easter] and the feast of St. Martin the Bishop in Winter [11 November].
