Gateshead Venerable Bede was established as a parish in 1885. It was created from the parishes of Gateshead St Edmund and Gateshead St James, both of which had been originally part of the ancient parish of St Mary. In 1983 this parish ceased to exist; it amalgamated with St James.
A church was erected in the parish in 1885, at a cost of £3,500. The church also owned a "mission room" which was used for Sunday Schools and other church functions. Records of the foundation of the parish (EP/Ga.VB 10) and the mission room (EP/Ga.VB 18, 15, 20) can be found in this collection.
The original Church of The Venerable Bede was declared redundant on 3 July 1984 under the Pastoral Measure of 1983 and subsequently demolished as the Church was not of
archaeological or architectural quality that it should be preserved.
The Church Hall estimated to have been built in the latter half of the 19th century and being directly to the south of the former Church, was converted for Church use in 1988, and financed by the Church Urban Fund.
The Church is built parallel to Wordsworth Street and is orientated north/south, so the liturgical 'east end' is to the north.
