Middleton St. George Parish (Ref: EP/Mi.SG)

Middleton St George is an ancient parish.
According to the Victoria County History for Durham:
"The site is an ancient one, but no portion of the existing structure is older than the latter half of the 13th century. The only parts of this date now standing are the chancel arch and the south and west walls of the nave."
From: 'Parishes: Middleton St. George', A History of the County of Durham: Volume 3 (1928), pp. 293-299. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42633 Date accessed: 17 October 2013.
The Church is described as follows in Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1902:
"The Church of St George is a small and plain building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, divided by a very fine arch of red sandstone, and an embattled western tower with pinacles, added in 1883, and containing one bell...in 1889 the church was restored and reseated with open benches, at a cost of £150, and has sittings for 120 persons."
In 2012 the church was rededicated and resumed its role as the main parish church. Before that date the church of St Lawrence was used for the main Sunday service and St George was used for Christmas Carol Services and funerals.
