Catalogue Description
GREATHAM HOSPITALGreatham Hospital was founded by Bishop Stichell by a Charter of 1272, which granted to the Master and eight Brethren the manor and advowson of Greatham for the support of themselves and forty poor people from the Bishop's estates. Being a lay institution, it was not affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries acts, and was refounded by royal letters patent in 1610. From that time the Hospital was to consist of the Master and thirteen poor unmarried men, with the power to purchase land and to grant leases.
This collection consists almost entirely of such leases, with some miscellaneous papers, which include information about the masters and brethren themselves.
