Catalogue Description

Records deposited on long-term loan

30 June 1997 Acc: 2457 (D)

Photographs, Notes and Measurements of Thirteenth Century Sedilia from Billingham, St. Cuthbert, Parish Church, recorded by Henry Lee on 19 August 1948

The sedilia from Billingham, St. Cuthbert, were removed when the thirteenth century chancel was rebuilt in 1847, and were relocated in the vicarage garden with a collection of other fragments from the old fabric. They were still in the vicarage garden when recorded by Mr. Lee in 1948. Mr. Lee noted that the sedilia, though not the other fragments, had been removed by 19 January 1974. Their present location is not known.

Henry Lee made his record of the Billingham sedilia towards the end of his school career. He went on to become vicar of Medomsley, Darlington Holy Trinity, and Brompton with Deighton, Yorkshire.
