Copy letter of William Charles Chaytor of Durham, to Richard Shortridge of South Shields re the claim of the curacy to additional compensation for land vested in the Dean and Chapter of Durham by the Act of 1768. The land was used as a site for the market. A memorial was prepared, chiefly by Mr. Shortridge and in this letter, Mr. Chaytor is refuting the claims of the memorialists, 29 November 1834

Copy reply of Mr. Shortridge. The letter is endorsed thus: "The above letter was prepared by a deputation of the Memorialists but was withheld in the hope that the Chapter would agree to the prayer of their Petition, 2 December 1834

Correspondence concerning a petition of the parishioners of South Shields to Parliament requesting an Act of Parliament authorising the Dean and Chapter of Durham to appropriate the proceeds of the sale of property required for the Docks and Pier at South Shields, for the improvement of the revenues of the incumbents of the town. Mr. Robert Ingham the local M.P. agreed to introduce a Bill and solicited the support of members of both houses. Mr. R.W. Swinburne led the campaign from South Shields so letters from him, therefore, are draft.
