2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry
Born, 22 May 1907, possibly in Ireland; enlisted at Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, in 2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, 7 July 1925; saw active service and was wounded in the North West Frontier campaign, India, 1930 - 1931; joined 'B' Reserve, 13 February 1933; recalled, 1 September 1939; served with the British Expeditionary Force in northern France and Belgium, and was captured during the retreat of the 2nd Battalion to Dunkirk; spent three years in German Prisoner of War camps, including Stalag XXI A and Oflag 64, before he escaped and returned to England in 1943; returned to active service in France, October 1944 - February 1945; discharged from the Regular Army on 15 May 1950 as Colour-Sergeant; joined 437 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment (T.A.), 16 May 1960; served with Territorial Army until finally discharged on 31 March 1961, aged 54; died 1976. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.

Transcript of letters from Second Lieutenant John Walcote Gamble, 14th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, probably to his mother, Mrs. Constance Gamble, covering war service in France and Belgium 1915-1916, and associated papers, 9 October 1915 - 27 April 1917 Describes living conditions both in and away from the front line, trench life, shelling, and gas. Letter dated 23 December 1915 describes visiting the ruins of Ypres Cathedral and taking a piece of stained glass [DLI Museum acc. 2155] as a souvenir. The letters of January 1916 describe Gamble's stay in hospital and at a convalescent base after being injured when a shell struck his dugout. Final letter from Gamble is dated 17 May 1916. Volume includes some typescript prose written by Gamble in May 1916 about the war, entitled 'Pencillings or Pennings at Dusk', that was found amongst belongings returned to his family after his death, also official correspondence to Mrs. Gamble notifying her of her son's death. Other 14th Battalion officers referred to in the letters include Lieutenant Richard Le Grice Eyre, Second Lieutenant Lawrence Newby Hickson and Lieutenant John Henry Iveson. Attached at the front of the volume is a photograph (D/DLI 7/238/4(1), and at the end are plans and papers (D/DLI 7/238/4(2-5).
