Catalogue Description
Thomas Lamb was born in 1823 in the Market Place in Houghton le Spring. He had musical talents and was sent to practice violin in Newcastle for a few years. He became a musician and music teacher in the area, organising colliery bands and performing in Durham. He abandoned his musical hobbies and profession after he married Mary Wilson in 1850. He started a brewery business in Old Brancepeth Castle Inn and shortly afterwards he became proprietor of the Commercial Hotel in Brancepeth. In 1861 he became owner of Hetton Brewery, formerly in the ownership of the late Joseph Love of Durham, esq.
He was also active in public life as a member of Hetton le Hole select vestry, member of the Board of Guardians and the Highways Board. He was also a director of Hetton and Easington Lane Water Company.
Hetton Brewery became a family business and his sons and grandsons successfully continued making spirits. In 1913 their products were awarded first prizes at the Brewers' Exhibition for Lamb's Pale Ale and Lamb's Oatmeal Stout. The company belonged to the family until 1954 when Thomas Lamb & Sons Limited was bought by Vaux and Associated Breweries.
