Born 9 March 1899; residence Stoke on Trent; enlisted under age in the Durham Light Infantry; served with the British Expeditionary Force in 1/8th Battalion; captured and taken prisoner by the Germans, possibly in March 1918; escaped, recaptured and later sent to work in the salt mines [location unknown]; killed his armed guard and escaped a second time, repatriated in 1918 with the help of the French Underground movement; no surviving service and pension records; died 1 January 1978
