St Chad, Bensham Correspondence (Ref: D/X 2353/6)Ref: D/X 2353/6/1Photocopy letter from Percy Bacon & Brothers of 11 Newman Street, London to Rev H. C. Windley of Layton Manor (Yorkshire) 10 September 1903
- 'Thank you for your letter of 9th inst. With cheque value £400 on a/c of the West Window at S. Chads, receipt for which we give at foot. We shall have great pleasure in re-drawing the subject and will endeavour to interpret your ideas, though we must again point out that the glass is but an enlarged duplicate of what was submitted to you. We will send you the new drawing for approval and hope to fix the glass, in about two months, when we shall be putting in a window at Bamburgh. With regard to the tint of the white glass used, we desire to impress upon you that artistic glass is entirely a matter of human judgement not machine-like accuracy. The tint chosen by Mr Hicks and yourself, was given to the Sir James Chance Co. the only makers of this class of glass in England (we do not use foreign glass) and the result is the nearest that human being can turn out to the last pot of glass: every pot contains about 200 ft and can never be duplicated exactly. Possibly the difference of aspect is accountable for a good deal.'

- to I. Bates of Gateshead - 'I am enclosing the original photograph from St Chad's showing Miss Townshend, along with a copy of the original, which has come out reasonably well. I am most grateful to you for the loan of the photograph, which is a great rarity - it is almost impossible to find photos of stained glass artists posing with examples of their work. As I mentioned in my letter of 1st March, I am organising an exhibition on Women Stained Glass Artists at the end of the year. Will it be O.K. to reproduce the photo of Miss Townshend in the exhibition catalogue? Acknowledgement will of course be made to St Chad's as holder of the original'.
'My thanks again for your co-operation in this matter. I shall send you further information about the exhibition later in the year'
The letter includes photograph of Miss Townshend's drawings for stained glass windows depicting Isaac Walton and William Blake.

- 'I was pleased to see you again at Alston in spite of the circumstances [the funeral of Rev Clement E. Curtis]. Having gone through the address book of Fr Curtis I thought I would send round a few photographs'.
'Ian has kindly sent me a silver framed photograph which is before me now. I have had quite a number of very appreciative letters from all sorts of people telling of the influence that father had on their lives. I have sent the photos to Ian. The present batch has been held up by the holiday rush for photo-printing'.
'Mabel seems to be all right. I have spoken to her a few times as well as to the staff'.
'Fr Turner is organising a Head stone for the grave. He was indeed a 'one-off' and we must all be thankful that we knew him'.
'I hope you keep well and send my best wishes'.
