Letter of appreciation of Joseph Moore by J. G. Finlayson, Headmaster of Holy Trinity Boys' School, South Shields - 25 September 1885 - 'Mr Joseph Moore was an Assistant Master in the above School when I took charge if it in April 1883. During this year he taught Standards II, III and IV at various times, but his responsible Standard was the Fourth. At the Annual Examinations it passed 87 per cent, a result which would be considered very good indeed by those who knew the low state in which the School was at the beginning of the year. Mr Moore was a pains-taking, energetic and conscientious teacher, skilful in managing large classes, and when in my School he was much respected by the boys with whom he came in contact'.

Testimonial letter from Charles Atkinson, Rector of Bishop Auckland to Joseph Moore - 24 September 1900 - 'I have much pleasure in writing a testimonial in favour of Mr Joseph Moore'. 'Mr Moore has been Master of the Morley School for the last 14 1/2 years & during that time has given entire satisfaction to the managers. When he took charge of the school it was at a very low ebb & he has in spite of many difficulties, raised it to the very highest point of efficiency'. 'Her Majesty's Inspector has spoken very highly to me of his abilities as a teacher'. 'I believe Mr Joseph Moore to be of unimpeachable character'.

Letter to Joseph Moore from D. B. L. Nedwill, vicar of Lynesack - 5 December 1910 - 'In accordance with a resolution of the Managers of the Lynesack Church School held this day I am copying from the Minute Book some few remarks which I ventured to make & which The Managers requested me to send you' "The Vicar said the meeting of managers was called on account of Mr Joseph Moore being appointed to the Headmastership of Fulwell School". "He was sure he voiced the feeling of that meeting when he said they were all very sorry that Mr Moore was about to sever his connection with them, for he has been for 9 1/2 years a pattern master, loved by the Scholars & Teachers, & one who had striven to do his duty to the School, the Parents & the Parish". "He had been instrumental, with the aid of a devoted Staff, in bringing the School to its present high state of efficiency, & he hoped that at Fulwell he would have health & strength given to him to discharge the duties devolving upon him with comfort & satisfaction to himself & all concerned". "He looked forward to no distant time when Fulwell School would be known throughout the length & breadth of the County as one of the best, if not the best in the County area".

Letter to Joseph Moore from Denis W. Marsh, Vicar of Lynesack - 26 December 1914 - 'I have valued the friendship of Mr Joseph Moore of Fulwell, Sunderland, for several years. I have always found him to be generous in thought and action, and I have appreciated his kindly candour & straightforwardness. His work at the new Fulwell Council School is highly esteemed by the parents of the children who attend the School. As Vicar of the Parish I have had exceptional opportunities of knowing and admiring both his methods & the results'. 'I think that his particular gift for guiding & helping those who are on his School Teaching Staff, and his exceptionally pleasant manner give me unusual confidence in supporting his application for the position for which he is applying'.

Newspaper cutting: 'The Late Mr Joseph Moore' - 1922 - 'The interment of the late Mr Joseph Moore, who died on Friday at his residence, 155, Sea Road, took place yesterday in Lynsack Churchyard, where the remains were conveyed by motor hearse. The deceased gentleman, who was highly respected and esteemed, was headmaster at Lynsack Schools, leaving there about eleven years ago to make up the appointment of headmaster at the Fulwell Boys' School, which position he has held until recently, when he retired owing to ill-health. At Lynsack the cortege was met by numerous friends, several members of the Rose of Raby Lodge of Freemasons, of which the deceased was a member, also many of his former scholars. A full choral service was conducted by the Rev Dennis Marsh (formerly at St Andrew's Church, Roker), who also officiated at the graveside. The following who were colleagues of the deceased, acted as pall-bearers: Messrs G. S. Gardiner, R. Tharrat, A. C. Greenhaugh, A. C. Hey, W. Nash and J. Birrell. The principal mourners were Mrs Moore, Miss Moore, Miss G. Moore, Mr Brown and Mr Robinson. In addition to the above there were also present Messrs J. T. Gibbon (Palatine Lodge No. 97) J. C. Edington (late district education secretary), J. J. Liddle (Fulwell Junior School), and Dr Beattie. Many beautiful floral tributes were sent as tokens of sympathy, respect and esteem. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. C. W. Tait'.
