Regular Army
The official for the regular army were published in annual, quarterly and half-yearly series from 1754 to 1950 (D/DLI 14/1/1-3)
Regular Army, Militia, Territorial Forces and Colonial Forces
The official lists for regular, militia, territorial and colonial forces were published in monthly and quarterly series from 1798 to 1950 (D/DLI 14/1/5-6)
From 1951 onwards, the official lists were published as a single series for regular, territorial and volunteer reserve forces (D/DLI 14/1/4)
An unofficial list of regular, militia, territorial and colonial forces, Hart's Army List, was published annually from 1839 to 1915 (D/DLI 14/1/7)
Annual Army Lists, 1795 - 1837
Arranged by regiment; indexed from 1766; engineer and artillery officers only included in the index from 1803. Replaced by the Quarterly Army Lists (First Series)
Quarterly Army Lists (First Series), 1904 - 1917, and n.d.
Contain the regimental list until 1907 only; all include a gradation list of officers in order of seniority, with dates of birth and promotions; from April 1881, details of officers' war service are included; from 1909 to 1922, war service details appear in the January issue only. Replaced by the Half-Yearly series.
Half-Yearly Army Lists, 1922 and 1931
Produced in January and July; from 1947, issued annually in February; all include a gradation list of serving officers; replaced by the modern Army Lists series.
Modern Army Lists, 1951 - ongoing
Revised in 1951 and now consisting of three parts. Part I is a list of serving officers; part II is a list of retired officers, now produced only every four years; and part III is the gradation list, a brief biography of officers, which is a restricted publication not available to the general public.
Monthly Army Lists, 1798 - June 1940
Arranged by regiment; officers of the regular army, colonial, militia and territorial forces; no index until 1867; replaced by the Quarterly Army Lists (Second Series)
Quarterly Army Lists (Second Series) July 1945 - December 1950
The quarterly army lists were compiled but not published during the Second World War. These lists were, in fact, compiled monthly or bi-monthly until December 1943, then quarterly until April 1947. After that date, they were produced three times a year, in April, August and December.
Hart's Army List, 1839 - 1902
An unofficial list produced between 1839 and 1915. It gives details of war service, which was omitted in the official lists until 1881.
