Born Spennymoor, 1882; commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 19th Battalion, 1917; awarded the Military Cross, October 1918, for bravery and leadership during the crossing of the River Lys and in the capture of Courtrai, France; after demobilization under-manager at Murton Colliery; died Murton, 1929, having never fully recovered from the effects of gassing during the First World War. Born Birr, Ireland, 1831; enlisted at Birr in 68th Light Infantry, 5 February 1852; promoted Corporal, 1854; served throughout Crimean War without injury or illness; promoted Sergeant in 1860; awarded the Victoria Cross, for distinguished conduct at the Battle of Te Ranga, New Zealand, 'London Gazette' 4 November 1864; transferred to 2nd North Durham Militia, Gilesgate, Durham City, 1872; discharged, aged 42, February 1873; returned to Ireland; died at Derrinlough, near Birr, Ireland, 8 April 1911.
