Catalogue Description
The original hospital chapel was in the Administration Block of the hospital and was designed to accommodate 200 patients. However, in 1880 the hospital chaplain, Rev B B Walton, requested in his annual report that a new church should be built. A new chapel dedicated to St Luke was completed in 1884, to a design by William Crozier junior, chief assistant to the County Architect. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Durham on 3 October 1884, and could seat 700.Information from Behind the Wall by Adam Lamb and Jack Turton, County Durham Books (2009).
