Darlington, St James was established as an ecclesiastical parish in 1872 from part of Darlington, St John parish, which in turn had been created out of part of the ancient parish of Darlington and part of the township of Blackwell in 1845.
The current congregation (2013) adheres to an Anglo-Catholic form of worship.
