- Middleton St.George St. Laurence Parish
Catalogue Description
The church of St Laurence was establised as a chapel of ease for the parish of Middleton St George. The church was erected 1870-1871 at a cost of £2,000 and the archive contains a number of building plans (EP/Mi.SL 4/2, 4/4-6, 4/8-12, 4/18-22, 4/24-34, 4/40).
Due to its size St Laurence became the main parish church in the 20th century, with Christmas Carol Services and some funerals being held at St George's Church.
The building was closed in 2012 and St George's reverted to being the main parish church, although Sunday Services take place at St George's Church of England Academy.
The Victoria County History for Durham describes the church as follows:
"The church of ST. LAWRENCE at Middleton One Row was built in 1871, and is a stone building in the 13th-century style, consisting of a chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and bell-turret with spire. In it are preserved a Saxon sundial and two medieval grave covers, one of elaborate design, all of which had formerly been built into the walls of the old church."
