Chester le Street Poor Law Union (Ref: U/CS 1-139/4)

From 1837 the Chester le Street Poor Law Union had responsibility for poor law provision in the area covering: the parish of Chester le Street (including the chapelry of Lamesley but not the chapelry of Tanfield); Washington parish; Witton Gilbert parish (except Kimblesworth), and; the South Biddick and Cocken townships of Houghton le Spring parish.
In 1846 the union became the rural sanitary authority, until around 1875.
In 1862 the Guardians of the union gained responsibility for rating valuation/assessment. This devolved, in 1925, to Chester le Street Rural District Council and the Urban District Councils of Chester le Street and Washington.
In 1930 responsibility for Public Assistance was transferred to Durham County Council.
