Admittances of freemen, 1742 - 3 October 1763 At beginning: copy byelaws concerning the admission of freemen at the guilds as follows: a fine of 20s. per week to be imposed on those who are not members of a guild exercising a trade within the city; 1s. to be paid to Mayor on person's being admitted to a company; Mayor, one or more aldermen, and wardens to meet four times a year to call each person on three occasions to be approved; any warden or steward making any person a freeman contrary to this bye-law to be fined £30; town clerk to keep a record of those admitted for a fee of 6d. per person; any freeman taking an apprentice solely for the purpose of making him free of the city and not teaching him his trade to be fined £30, 8 November 1728 pp.25-28: copy byelaws re-enacting all provisions of byelaws of 8 November 1728 except that mayor, aldermen and wardens and stewards of companies to meet four times a year to call each person, and each person to be called once only, 13 October 1761 [See index 706 in microfilm room]
