Elvet Methodist Church

Ref: M/DDV 669

Photograph of the first Elvet Meeting House, n.d., [c.1930-40] Built in 1770 on Rotton Row, later known as Court Lane, [on part of the site of the present Orchard House], this was the first methodist church in Durham, with approximately thirty members. As the membership grew, a larger building was needed and in 1808 the second Elvet church was built on Chapel Passage (the site is now part of the car park of the County Hotel). This church was occupied until the present Elvet church was built in 1903.

Memorandum relating to Trust property at 78-9 New Elvet containing a proposal that the Trust of 1927 be transferred to Elvet Methodist Church Trust, n.d. [1954] [This refers to the Wesleyan Sunday School and Day School for 130 pupils bought and supported by the second Elvet Church (Chapel Passage) in 1847. The Day School continued for almost 50 years and the Sunday School until 1903, when the present Elvet church and hall opened. The premises in New Elvet were then let and the rent to a large extent was paid over to the Elvet Church Trust until a new trust was formed in 1927 to look after the New Elvet premises. During the Second World War (1939-45) part of the premises were used for the Sunday School. In 1947 the premises were sold and the money invested.]
