From 1837 Sedgefield Poor Law Union had responsibility for poor law provision in the area covering: the parish of Sedgefield (including Embleton chapelry); parishes of Bishop Middleham, Bishopton, Great Stainton and Redmarshall; the Nunstainton, Preston le Skerne and Woodham townships of Great Aycliffe parish; the Ferryhill and Chilton townships of Merrington parish; the Trimdon chapelry of Kelloe parish, and; Garmondsway Moor.
In 1846, the union also became the rural sanitary authority, lasting until 1875.
In 1862, the Guardians of the union gained responsibility for rating valuation/assessment. This devolved, in 1925, to Sedgefield Rural District Council.
In 1930, responsibility for Public Assistance was transferred to Durham County Council.
