Ref: RC/Bl 1/6According to Whellan's Directory, 1894, St Mary's Mixed Catholic School was erected in 1859 in Durham Road and West Row, Blackhill, but notes made by Canon Henry Gillow suggest that it may have been either re-founded, by the Sisters of Mercy of the Charity of St Paul, or reorganised, on 8 March 1866 with the priest of the church at St Mary's, Blackhill chairing the school managers. The school was placed under the Government inspection scheme on 1 May 1866.
