Catalogue Description

BELK OF HARTLEPOOL

The Belk family held numerous official positions in Hartlepool. Thomas Belk was a Clerk to the Borough Justices and Town Clerk to both the old Corporation recreated in 1841 and the new open Corporation established in 1850-1851. Stephen Herbert Belk succeeded him in the office of Clerk to the Justices and also acted as Clerk to the West Hartlepool magistrates. Henry Belk was Town Clerk and Clerk to the Urban Sanitary Authority c. 1890, while Alfred Belk succeeded Stephen Herbert Belk as Clerk to the Borough Justices.
