Charlaw and Sacriston Collieries (Ref: D/X 1354/1)

The Charlaw Pit main coal seam commenced working in 1839. The Brass Thill seam and Hutton seam were opened in 1859. Nettlesworth Pit, Hutton seam was also opened at this time. The Charlaw Pit continued working until 1884 when it became part of the Victoria Pit. The Victoria, Witton Nettlesworth and Kibblesworth Coal Companies amalgamated on 12 August 1890 to form the Charlaw and Sacriston Colliery Company. The Shield Row drift was opened at Sacriston in 1897.

Hylton Colliery (Ref: D/X 1354/117)

Hylton Colliery, Castletown, Sunderland, was owned by the Wearmouth Coal Company. A new winning was sunk on 17 May 1897, from the surface to the Hutton seam, and the colliery was in operation in January 1900. The colliery became part of NCB in 1947 and closed in 1979.

Herrington Pit (Ref: D/X 1354/118-119)

Herrington Pit, West Herrington, was also known as Lady Beatrice Colliery. Work commenced in the Hutton seam in 1874. The colliery was owned by Lord Lambton in 1873; The Lambton Colliery Company in 1900; James Joicey and Company in 1911; and Lambton Hetton and Joicey Collieries in 1928. The Colliery became part of the NCB in 1947, and closed in 1985.

South Moor Colliery (Ref: D/X 1354/120)

South Moor Colliery, Lanchester, was also known as Quaking Houses Pit in 1857. It was called South Moor, Morrison Pit, in 1921, and Holmside and South Moor Collieries, Morrison Busty Pits in 1938. The Colliery became part of the NCB in 1947 and closed in 1973.
