The firm of Allison is a long-standing one in Whitburn: the first ledger listed below begins in 1798. Pigot's Directory of 1828 lists Robert Allison [sic] stonemason; Slater's Directory of 1848 lists Robert and William Allison, stonemasons; Whellan's Directory of 1856 lists William and Robert Allison, stonemasons, and Kelly's Post Office Directory of 1879, lists R. Allison, builder. The Post Office Directories of 1890, 1902, 1910, 1914, 1921, 1925, 1929, 1934 and 1938, list William Allison, builder, North Road.

Private Eddie Bell was a prisoner of war in the Second World War. He was captured on 27 July 1942 at Benghazi, Libya, but was taken to Italy in September 1942. He remained a prisoner until the armistice with Italy in September 1943, when he was set free by the prison camp guards. He travelled, with fellow prisoners, to Switzerland, where they were interned for the rest of the war. William Edward Bell died in July 1994.
