Catalogue Description
The Ropner Shipping Company was founded by Sir Robert Ropner in 1874 at West Hartlepool. The company lost over half its fleet during the 1914-1918 war and was left with only four ships following the 1939-1945 war.
A new holding company, Ropner Holdings Limited, acquired the shares of the Ropner Shipping Company and the Pool Shipping Company in 1948, and was subsequently quoted on the stock exchange as a public company.
Roper Holdings traded as ship owners and managers until taken over by Jacob Holdings plc in 1997.
