Ref: D/Sh.H 800In 1644, the Master, John Machon, was forcibly removed from Sherburn Hospital by the Scottish Army and John Fenwicke, a tradesman from Newcastle upon Tyne, was appointed his successor. He and his son, also John Fenwicke, held the position until the Restoration when John Machon successfully petitioned the King for his reinstatement. These papers concern the dispute between Machon and John Fenwicke the younger over compensation for damage to the Hospital during Fenwicke's tenure
Ref: D/Sh.H 937The following cases all concern disputed rights to certain estates owing tithes to the Hospital. The Master gave notice that suits would be brought against each of the defendants for the restoration of the tithes to the Hospital. The various defendants then petitioned the King requesting a halt to all proceedings and the appointment of independent arbiters. The cases were referred to the Bishop of Durham, Thomas Swinburne and Sir William Killinghall, who made awards on 30 January 1639/40. In each case the defendants failed to comply with the orders
