The Eldon Collection
This collection consists of deeds of title to land purchased, mainly in the south-east of County Durham, by successive Earls of Eldon.
John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon, was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 4 June 1751. He was the third son of William Scott, a coal merchant. He was called to the bar in 1776, was appointed Solicitor-General and knighted in 1788. In 1793 he became Attorney-General. He became Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas and was created Baron Eldon of Eldon, County Durham in 1799. In 1801 he was appointed Lord Chancellor of England, an office which he held with a break of only fourteen months from February 1806 to April 1807, until 1827. On 7 July 1821 he was created Viscount Encombe of Encombe, Dorset, and Earl of Eldon. He died on 13 January 1838 and was succeeded by his grandson, John, second Earl of Eldon. The second earl was born on 10 December 1805 and died on 18 September 1854 and was succeeded by his son, John, third Earl of Eldon, who was born on 8 November 1854 and died on 10 August 1926. He, in turn, was succeeded by his grandson, John, fourth Earl of Eldon, born on 29 March 1899. The fourth Earl died in 1976 and was succeeded by his son, John, fifth Earl of Eldon, born 24 April 1937. The fifth Earl died on 30 January 2017 and was succeeded by his only son, John Francis Thomas Marie Joseph Columba Fidelis Scott, sixth Earl of Eldon, born 9 July 1962.
