Catalogue Description
Drama in the Dale is a Weardale community project engaging people of all ages and backgrounds in a range of creative activities. Formed initially in the autumn of 2011, funded by a grant from the Adult and Community Learning Fund its first production was a stage play called 'The Bonny Moorhen', based on a story of the Stanhope rebellion of 1819. The project incorporated research into archives from the time, including a community visit to Durham County Record Office. Local schools wrote and performed a 'Lead Opera' (as opposed to a soap opera) which was broadcast online. The 'Unthank' theatre was specially constructed on the Stanhope showfield for the 3 sell-out performances of The Bonny Moorhen in March 2012.Following on the success of the initial six month project, a new steering committee was formed and a grant from the Big Lottery Village SOS Fund enabled the project to set up and staff an office in the Old Station House at Frosterley. The Bonny Moorhen was performed again at Killhope in June 2013, as a promenade performance.
The project continues with a community choir and handbell instruction as part of 'Colour Your Life' service, represented in Durham Dales by the Jack Drum Arts. More information on the project can be found on http://dramadale.co.uk/
