Catalogue Description

Not much is known of John Surtees beyond his name and the fact that he presumably compiled the scrapbook, D/X 2050/1. Thomas Surtees of 22 Alma Street, Easington Colliery, is also mentioned. His connection to John is unknown, though they do not appear to be brothers or father and son. The postcard, D/X 2050/3, is addressed to Mrs Surtees, who may be John's wife or mother.

Thomas Surtees (1920) was the 4th son of Matthew White R Surtees (1891-1951) of Ryhope and his first wife Sarah Honour (1892-1923). John Surtees (1924) was the first child of this Matthew and his second wife Rosabell Innes (1889-1956) of Southwick. Matthew was killed in the 1951 Easington Colliery disaster and his address then, and in the 1939 list, was 22 Alma Street.
